A warrant is out for the arrest of a former Calgary police officer accused of breach of trust and misuse of a computer system.
Investigators believe that between 2008 and 2023, 51-year-old Brett Singer had relationships with numerous women he met through calls for service or police-related matters. They allege he used police databases for a personal purpose to find and engage in further contact with the women outside of his responsibilities as a police officer.
A complaint was first made against Singer in July 2023. When the investigation showed evidence that supported the allegations, he was suspended with pay in January 2024.
Singer’s duty status continued to be assessed throughout the investigation, and in September 2024, he was suspended without pay.
He resigned from the service a short time later, after 16 years.
Police say Singer has since left the country and not come back.
As a result, charges have been laid using a warrant, which has been extended to include all of Canada.
“To the women who were impacted by this individual and to Calgarians generally, I want you to know this is a serious situation that we will never take lightly. This was a CPS officer – someone who held a position of authority, someone you should have been able to trust,” Calgary Police Service Chief Const. Mark Neufeld said in a statement. “We have zero tolerance for these behaviours by police officers and will take every measure to protect the public and to hold those who engage in these activities to full account.
“This behaviour is not reflective of the values of our service, nor the good work done by the majority of our members every day.”
Singer is facing one count of breach of trust and one count of misuse of a computer system.
He is described as six feet tall, 210 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair.
Anyone who believes they have experienced inappropriate contact of a personal nature by a police officer is encouraged to report it to the Professional Standards Section through either the public portal on our website, or by calling 403-428-5904.
