Some motorists will need to find another way into downtown Calgary this weekend with the 4th Avenue flyover set to fully close to traffic.
The city says crews have almost finished construction on the left side of the bridge, and they will need to shut down both lanes as they get ready to start construction on the right side.
The flyover is expected to be closed from 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15 to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18. Traffic will be detoured to enter downtown using the Reconciliation Bridge.
The 4th Avenue flyover has been down to a single lane since April and the $12.5 million rehabilitation work on the bridge is not expected to be finished until late fall of 2025.
“We’re making great progress on the bridge restoration and are working through the winter to get the bridge reopened for commuters as quickly as possible,” says Max Lacroix, manager and structural engineer on the project. “We really appreciate Calgarians bearing with us as we complete this important work.”
The project will rebuild the existing concrete barriers, add lighting, and replace concrete paving and expansion joints on the bridge that spans 430-metres over the Bow River.
The work will aim to extend the life of the bridge by approximately 35 years.
The 108-year-old Mission Bridge along 4 Street SW wasfully closed to traffic last month, and is expected to remain closed for more than a year to give crews room to finish “necessary rehabilitation work.”
