Teen charged with assault after Market Mall employees bear sprayed

Police have arrested and charged a suspect who allegedly bear sprayed mall employees in northwest Calgary in September.

Calgary police say officers were called to CF Market Mall around 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 11 for reports of an assault.

According to police, four people walked into Sport Chek when an employee suspected them of shoplifting and asked them to leave. Police say the group left the store without taking anything.

It is alleged a member of the group returned to the store a short time later and approached the employee who asked them to leave. The suspect allegedly bear sprayed the employee and another worker before leaving the mall.

The two workers were treated with First Aid but were not transported to hospital.

In an update Wednesday, police say they have arrested a 17-year-old boy and charged him with one count of assault with a weapon and one count of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The teen cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
