“The series finale of America is on”: Canadians react to another Trump presidency

Donald Trump has secured his second presidential term in the United States, and as their neighbours to the north, Canadians have many thoughts.

The 78-year-old Republican will become the 47th president of the US, beating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris after securing over 270 of the electoral college votes needed to win.

In addition, Republicans also took control of the Senate, while the House of Representatives is still in contention, although the GOP is leading in votes.

Trump’s return to the White House comes despite a criminal conviction, two presidential impeachments, 34 felony counts, six bankruptcies, and several sexual misconduct allegations.

Canadians shared their reactions to the re-election online.

“Wake up babe, the series finale of America is on,” one Canuck joked on Reddit.

Another Redditor shared how they’re glad the election is over because they’re “sick to death with their BS getting more attention here than things actually happening” in Canada.

But while it might feel like watching a wild reality TV show from the comfort of your couch, many Canadians are stressing that this presidency will inevitably hit hard at home.

“We can be annoying about the election fr but it’s not like we feel zero consequences from who is elected as president,” shared one person on X. “America heavily influences Canadian politics and Canada’s economy, same goes for many other countries on the planet.”

Others shared similar sentiments.

Several noted a similar political landscape in Canada.

“’As a Canadian, I can’t imagine’ stfu we’re like six months away from electing great value fascists of our own,” reads a post on X.

“With the US election today, I don’t want to see or hear any ‘as a Canadian’ memes. Our political landscape is almost as bad, and it’s getting worse because of Trump/MAGA ideologies seeping in. There are Canadians who were happy with the outcome,” added another.

And there certainly are Canucks who shared their support for the outcome online.

“Trump freaking won!!! There’s hope Canada there is hope to kick Trudeau to the curb where he belongs in the next election,” shared one person on X.

“If Trump wins, I’m leaving Canada… for the United States 😁,” chimed in another supporter.

With all of the doom and gloom, there are some soon-to-be Canadians who are still grateful to be in the country instead of the US.
