For the first time in his career, Calgary’s Drew Fischer has been named Referee of the Year in Major League Soccer (MLS).
The 44-year-old blew the main whistle in 16 MLS games during the regular season, and his 200th match as an MLS referee came on Canadian soil when the Vancouver Whitecaps hosted LAFC at B.C. Place earlier this month.
MLS club technical staff, media, and MLS players voted on the award.
Along with Fischer’s domestic officiating resume, he’s also worked at many international events, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the FIFA World Cup.
Additionally, Fischer was named the Ray Morgan Memorial Award winner in 2022 and 2023. It is handed out annually by the Canadian Soccer Association to referees who show progress at the national and international levels.
