Man charged in two random stabbings in downtown Calgary: police

A man is facing charges after two stabbings in downtown Calgary last month that sent people to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Calgary police say emergency crews were called to Century Gardens Park near 8 Street SW and 8 Avenue SW around 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 for reports of a stabbing.

Crews arrived to find an injured victim who was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The suspect left the area before officers arrived.

Police say the suspect was arrested a few hours later at 12:45 a.m. early Monday with the help of Calgary Transit and City of Calgary security.

Since the arrest, investigators determined the suspect stabbed someone else at City Hall CTrain Station around 8:45 p.m. on Sept. 3. The victim in that stabbing was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Police say both victims have since been released from hospital.

Investigators don’t believe the victims knew the suspect and both stabbings “appear to have been random in nature.”

Calgary resident Kendall Joseph Raine, 22, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and breaching a probation order.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in a Calgary courtroom on Friday.
